How to compress an image

  1. Open an image and choose JPG or WebP

Choose, drop or paste an image, then select JPG or WebP under Save as to use quality-based compression.

  2. Adjust quality and compare the result

Lower Image quality gradually. Check the preview for lost detail and compare the output file size; a re-encoded image can be larger than the original.

  3. Download the result that fits your needs

Choose a balance of detail and file size, then download. For a further reduction, apply your settings and use Resize image to reduce the pixel dimensions.

Quality around 80% is a useful starting point. Compare the file size before you download.

Supported formats & limits

Open one image at a time (up to 30 MB): JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or AVIF where your browser supports it. Save as JPG, PNG or WebP, with outputs limited to 12,000 pixels per side and 40 megapixels in total. Animated GIFs export as a still image; HEIC is not supported. WebP export needs browser encoding support (otherwise PNG is used); blur requires Canvas filters.

Images are processed in your browser. Image contents and filenames are not sent to our servers or analytics. Refreshing or leaving the tools area clears your working image.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress an image to an exact KB size?

There is no target file-size setting. Adjust JPG or WebP quality and check the output size. Reducing dimensions with Resize image can also help, but a specific KB size is not guaranteed.

Why is the quality control disabled for PNG?

PNG export is lossless, so its encoder does not use the quality setting. Select JPG or WebP for quality-based compression, or resize the image to reduce the number of pixels.

Why can the compressed image be larger?

The source may already be efficiently compressed, or the selected format and quality may produce more data. Check the reported output size before downloading; re-encoding does not guarantee a smaller file.

Do my images get uploaded?

No. Images are processed locally in your browser. The website uses the anonymous page analytics described in our privacy policy, but image contents and filenames are not collected.

Can I combine edits?

Yes. Select Apply changes to keep an edit before continuing with another tool, or choose Apply & switch when prompted. Undo and Redo move through applied edits, and Restore original returns to the source image. Download your result before refreshing or leaving the tools area.

Continue editing

If adjusting quality is not enough, reduce the image dimensions to export fewer pixels.

Need to keep transparency? choose PNG or WebP in the image converter and check the resulting size.

Apply your changes?

Keep these changes before switching tools, or discard them and continue with your last applied image.

Leave without downloading?

Your current image and edits live only in this tab. Leaving the tools area clears this session. Keep editing to download your result first, or leave and discard the session.
